Match recap

Perth Scorchers batted first and set a total that looked unbeatable. Finn Allen made 79 from 38 balls and Cooper Connolly made 77 from 37, and Perth finished on 257 for 6, a franchise record. Both teams would go on to hit 18 sixes each, 36 in total, and the match aggregate of 515 runs was the first time the 500-run barrier had been passed in a BBL match.

Brisbane’s chase started in the worst possible way. Colin Munro was out first ball, and Matt Renshaw was then caught — only to be called back after replays showed the bowler had overstepped for a front-foot no-ball. That reprieve, at a moment when Brisbane were already two wickets down in effect, changed the whole night.

Renshaw made 102 from 51 balls and Jack Wildermuth finished unbeaten on 110 from 54 balls. Two centuries in the same run chase is rare enough on its own; doing it while chasing 258, after losing a wicket first ball, is what makes this chase stand out in BBL history. Renshaw was eventually run out late, but by then the required rate was under control.

Brisbane reached 258 for 2 with one ball to spare, winning by eight wickets. It was the biggest successful chase in BBL history and the third-biggest in T20 cricket overall. Perth’s record total lasted only one innings — and that, more than any single shot, is why this game is still talked about.
